Finally resolved my "hives" which turned out to be a food allergy to Balsam of Peru - so I was put on a "Low Balsam" diet - which prohibits citrus fruits (as well as ice cream, chocolate and pastries, candy, tea and tomatoes) - and voila, I'm itch free! If I eat a slice of orange, I break out again. That is a bummer, as I loved oranges and lime/lemon in my water, but I've switched to apple cider vinegar in my mug of hot water - and it is working out fine. I've also been forced to drop all bread, rice, pasta and potatoes -- because my blood glucose numbers were creeping up - so eating a plant based diet with beans is timely!!!
- Why I've Joined Reboot with Joe: Grew up skinny and ate mindlessly without consequences (see profile pic) until the mid-forties. Then started gaining weight - averaging 5 lbs a year for 20 years! Never had any health issues until I got over 60. Mayo Clinic doc told me to "start eating like a diabetic" because my fasting glucose level is 116 instead of 95 or less. Got a skin rash/hives about 8 months ago after a course of antibiotics which changes locations and is unbearably itchy. Seems to be overactive inflammation/histamine. I've tried to lose weight for 15 years with zero success despite even having a live-in personal coach and nutritionist periodically. Hoping to complete this juice fast and reach my target weight within 6 months. I currently take no prescription medications, have low blood pressure and really want to stay healthy into my old age! Definitely not interested in EVER being diabetic - and tired of unbearable itching - just like Joe Cross (and later Phil) when they launched their own journeys. Very motivated!

I am back in Hawaii after getting an "all clear" from the Mayo Clinic. My hives turned out to be "contact dermatitis" which reportedly effects 20% of the population at some point in life. My skin is allergic to about 9 things - including cobalt chloride hexahydrate (which is in virtually all metals) and propolis which are the two standouts. So I'm hoping to get that under control soon. Last summer on the reboot I lost 18 pounds - I regained 9 of them over the past six months - so my new plan is to lose another 10 in the next 5 weeks. Onward and inward!!!!
Doing a 3 day reboot while gearing up for my second colonoscopy on Wednesday! Reboot is a great help -- lots of liquids and fluids for the next 3 days! Really hope that I get a clean bill of health (and some help with chronic hives) at Mayo Clinic. I have good energy and finished a great book about glycemic loads which underscored why eating and juicing as Dr. Fuhrman indicates in The End of Dieting - his newest book - is a good idea. No more grains (bread, potatoes, pasta or rice) or sweet stuff for me after seeing what the glycemic loads are and how your blood sugar skyrockets. This is clearly what lies at the root of our diabetes and obesity. I'm optimistic that this is the right track! Juice and water for three days now! Taking no supplements or prednisone - want super clear blood labs - so there is no confusion about what my body is doing! Onward and inward!
Dropping in to see what people are doing. I'm still having one glass of fresh veggie or OJ juice a day for breakfast plus veggie wrap/peanut sauce for lunch when I'm at work (5 days week) - and eating much healthier. I've gained back 6 pounds, but read The Food Hourglass, which is well written and explains a lot that I did not know. I've read widely for years, but much of this was excellent information, very scientific. He expands on Joel Fuhrman's plant based diet, adding fish and dark chocolate. I'm skeptical about eating fish because of the amount of plastic in the ocean, but love it -- and have put it back into my diet. Dark chocolate apparently reduces blood pressure and is just as effective - and better for the body - than medication. I'm still battling hives but am fortunate that mine are not completely debilitating. I've been taking Chinese herbs and when they get really bad, break down and take a 5mg Prednisone for 2 days. I expect to do two reboots a year - when I'm in Hawaii - and hope to continue a weight loss that takes me all the way down to my target - but obviously it is going to take longer than I expected. Heading to the Mayo Clinic next month and hope to get a clean bill of health.. I feel good, lots of energy and love adding a daily juice (or two) to my day! Juice on!
I am still battling hives and wishing that I could do a 60 day reboot and get rid of them like Joe did, but the 40-day modified reboot I did last summer really didn't make a dent in them. Taking a lot of Chinese herbs and hoping for the best. Loving my fresh juices every morning (carrot, apple and turmeric) and salads for lunch. Cooked food is rarer and rarer in my diet these days. A good change...
Did a two day modified reboot the past couple days. All plant based. They got a new chef at the restaurant near me and his burger was definitely "dead meat"... so it cured me of wanting to go back there again! Burger binge is over. So I'm back on juices, salads, fruit smoothies and veggies. I feel like a free woman! All it takes is a bad cook to get me back to raw foods!
Drinking juice and eating salad again. Felt so sad to read that Phil had regained all 200 lbs of the weight he had lost on FSND. I wish I had been able to see the movie last week, but will buy the DVD when it comes out. Stress, loss and disappointment are a part of life on earth and it is so important to count our blessings and stay positive and connected. As someone said, "don't look back, you're not going that way" -- onward and inward!
I'm back after a major (historically unprecedented) burger binge - my sister came to town and we went out. I had fries and a burger. After she left, I went back every single day for a WEEK and ate a burger (with a salad) - so although I could kick the fries to the curb, the burger was addictive. I finally looked up "red meat addiction" on Goggle and yup, there is something in the beef that is addictive - not to mention CHEESE is highly addictive - and the hamburger bun turns into pure glucose. Salt/sugar/fat burger combo -- all highly addictive. The good news is that my weight is steady. I'd eat plant foods all day, juice - and like Joe Cross, go to the "fun part of town" at night. Not going to reach my weight loss goal doing that - but it didn't ruin me. I'm drinking more juice, don't want to get diabetic and am determined to break 200. Juice on!
Day 14 - Salad with chia seeds, 2 hard boiled eggs and a lot of green juice yesterday. Scale dropped half a pound. Working very hard at the gallery, busy weekend, closing out August. Tomorrow I will go walking and get some exercise. Today it is up and down the stairs of my office about ten times. Onward and inward....
Day 13 - Nice salad with chia seeds for dinner with some fruit in the Vitamix for dessert. Lots of juice yesterday and water. Nice to have company for a few days, then family arriving. I do enjoy having friends visit me more than family - though I enjoy family too. More pressure on me when the family comes for some reason. I miss some of the old timers to this site that seem to have vanished lately... anyway, I am plugging away trying to break 200. Onward and inward!

I completely understand and empathize where you all might be coming from - I have so been there and done that. The hardest part is just making the decision to commit to your self. It seems that once you make the decision to overcome confusing eating habits and make a change....the quick results and new found energy pumps you up to follow through, prevail and find success.

HI, My name is Lizane, I'm French Canadian, I'm married, have two children and now have a grandson and a little girl on the go. I'm 45 years old, diabetic on insulin and overweight. I decided to create this group for people who are looking for someone to buddy with along the journey of rebooting. Sometime help, encouragement, story sharing or just a simple joke can do the trick in helping others. We might have different reasons why we do this but we are all in the same boat. This is a support group for those of us with a little snow on the roof, but anyone is welcome. I just think the Senior group needs representation. We want to stay vital and keep the Grim Reaper away from our doors as long as possible. I believe good nutrition is paramount to this goal. If we help each other, I KNOW we can succeed. I've been Juicing for a year off and on, so I have seen the benefits.
